I know what you are thinking … three homes? But hear me out.
My husband has been in commercial real estate for thirty-five years so it only makes sense that we have made investments in real estate.
In 1998 we bought Dave’s parent’s home in South Pasadena, Ca. and it’s where we live full time. It’s the home I refer to as My 100 Year Old Home.
In 2012 I managed to talk my husband in to buying a house in Ventura, Ca. The home is at the beach and is only an hour and twenty minutes away from our home. I call it the “kid magnet” home because it has been a great draw for our kids. And when your kids are in their mid to late twenties, that’s a good thing.
In 2019 we bought a home in Waco, Tx. as an investment as a short-term rental. It was a huge project but has been my favourite remodelling project ever! I am thrilled with the outcome and I poured a lot of love into this home. It’s now available as a rental on AirBnb and VRBO.
My 100 Year Old Home
As I mentioned, we bought my in-laws home over twenty years ago. I didn’t mention that they bought our house too!
Our home has changed over the last twenty years as we remodeled three different times (and they were very big projects). The first remodel was the kitchen, family room, two downstairs baths and the outdoor patio. A few years later we added a pool and remodeled our master bedroom, two upstairs baths, and the third-floor attic. Our last major remodel was when we updated my art studio (The Carriage House) and added an outdoor kitchen.
I love our home so much and it’s the perfect place to entertain. We have hosted engagement parties, rehearsal dinners, weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, themed dinners, dinners for 100, and our annual Christmas party for 200.

My 100 Year Old Waco Home
In 2019 we bought a home in Waco, Texas on a half-acre lot with a two-hundred-year-old oak tree. We bought the home to fix up and rent as a short-term rental. My plans included remodeling this fixer-upper home into a farmhouse-style home with a large wrap-around porch. I loved that we could finally have a home we could share with others.
The ceilings in the Waco home are 11’4” tall and the floors and ceilings are original wood. We had to take down the original shiplap to add insulation. I decided I didn’t want shiplap on every wall so I put it on two walls in the common living area and kitchen and on one wall in each of the bedrooms. I found vintage interior doors and I love how they look in our home.
After a year of remodeling, My 100 Year Old Waco Home became the perfect home to stay at while visiting Waco. Located one mile from the Magnolia Silos and Market and Baylor University, this three-bedroom, two-bathroom home is ready for guests as a full-time short-term rental.

Ventura Beach House
I am still not sure how I convinced my husband to purchase the home in Ventura at the beach. I know we originally were going to rent it out as a short-term rental but somehow we (as in I) changed our mind about that too.
But it’s been an amazing getaway for our entire family and we have loved it since the day we bought it.
I remodeled the entire inside of the home shortly after we purchased the home. That included replacing all of the doors and windows, gutting and replacing the entire kitchen and two bathrooms, redoing the lighting, adding a tongue and groove ceiling in the great room, and adding. A new fireplace, replacing the banister, and adding board and batten in the entryway. The most amazing part of the remodel is that I finished it in twelve weeks.
The home is two stories and has two family rooms, a small galley kitchen, three bedrooms, and two baths. We did not remodel the exterior of our home and this will happen soon. By far the highlight of our beach house is the great ocean views. I love that we can also hear the waves crashing from every room.
We currently have plans to add a third story to the home and redo the exterior. I am still not sure if that is going to happen but potentially this could be my next remodeling project.
